The Historical Background
of
Oak Street Haven
132 E. Oak Street
1902-2006

Welcome to 132 E. Oak Street. Built in 1902 by Walter and Sarah Casteel, this old house was known as the Sarah Casteel House once construction was complete. The Casteels lived here until 1909.

Since then, this house has been called “home” by several families. In the 1940’s, it was owned by Raymond and Helen Armstrong; it was “home” for Sheriff Graham and his family, and was also occupied by the Tucker family.  In 1954, Raymond and Mary Jane Wienke purchased the old house from the Armstrongs, and raised two sons here.

The house was bought in 1999 by one of the Weinke’s granddaughters, who settled here with her husband and two children. The Vrenos remained in the house until 2003, when Dr. Gary and Melodie Lacaze purchased the historical site. With much care, they have remodeled it into what is currently here today: Oak Street Haven, a Christian book store and coffee house.

Each family who has lived here has given this house all the love and respect it deserves. If you listen closely you will hear happy laughter, and the many prayers of thankfulness given to God, for what this house has offered to so many people. For one hundred and four years, this little corner house has been a part of Kingman.

And now, because of all the hard work and love throughout the years, this house stands proudly restored. Welcome to Oak Street Haven: a place of enjoyment for the townspeople to share in a special part of Kingman’s history.
